Keeper System

The keeper system in this league is designed so that each franchise has some historical consistency and an overall sense of organizational pride. Each season, franchise owners decide how much of their previous roster they would like to bring with them into the future. Each roster can retain between four and eight players from one season to the next.

Keeper Rules

The keeper system operation begins ten days prior to the Official Draft date. On this day, two things occur. One is that rosters are frozen, meaning no more trades are allowed. Another is that all owners submit a draft keeper list to the league. This is a list of players from the franchise roster who will remain with the franchise to begin the new season. The list must contain between four and ten players. The draft lists are shared with all owners for review and planning.

Five days prior to the Official Draft date, owners must submit a final keeper list containing between four and ten players. Final keeper lists cannot be added to, subtracted from, or changed in any way. All players that are not included on a final keeper list immediately become free agents in the draft pool and may be selected by any franchise in the Official Draft.

During the Official Draft, each owner MUST select all players listed on his final keeper list before he selects a free agent. The order the keepers are drafted is unimportant. For example, if an owner submitted five players on his final keeper list, the owner MUST select one of those five players, and nobody else, in each of rounds one through five. After an owner has drafted all of his keepers, he may select any free agent that is still available with his remaining draft choices. Each owner will have access to all franchise keeper lists so that he can see the players who are not free agents due to keeper designation by other owners.

It is important to note that it may benefit some teams to designate a smaller number of keepers. This may be true if an owner feels as though the players in the free agent pool are better than the players he has on his roster to designate as keepers. This is an issue that owners will have to address for their own teams. The draft keeper lists may help owners to develop a strategy on how to handle the issue. The draft keeper lists, however, are not final and may differ from the final keeper lists.

Keeper Management

There will be an area on the league website where owners can go to access keeper information. The draft keeper lists and final keeper lists will be displayed there at the appropriate times. These lists will also be distributed via league email.

Keeper Deadlines

Draft keeper lists are due ten days prior to the Official Draft. Final keeper lists are then due five days prior to the Official Draft. If an owner fails to meet these deadlines, his franchise will automatically be assigned the five players on his roster that finished highest on the previous year player rater. The owner is required to draft those four players with his first five picks in the Official Draft.
